Name
Lucy
Job Title
Executive Support
Company
Magnox Electric
Typical day

I work in Executive Support, which reports on what the sites are doing for our customer, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).  My role started by shadowing people in my team, learning about their jobs to get a wider picture of what my department does.  Recently I have been covering our risk co-ordinator’s role, which evaluates the risk to project delivery timescales and costs.  I have gone on a risk course, and have spent a lot of time talking to different people about their risks, which is giving me the opportunity to make lots of contacts at other sites.

I have also been working on the Shared Services project which is a project that could save the taxpayer millions of pounds. The NDA wants to save money by encouraging companies in its estate, including Magnox Electric, to share some of its services.  I have been involved in tasks such as writing a business case and researching companies that use and provide shared services.  I will soon be visiting these companies and reporting on the models they use.  This has been a really exciting project to be involved in and I have been able to learn a lot about the business and the industry in a short space of time.

Advice for new graduates

Grasp any opportunity that comes your way with both hands and push yourself as it will definitely benefit you in the long run.  Be proactive and talk to people as much as you can; you never know when you will need their help.  Also, do not be afraid to ask questions – you’re here to learn.

Highlights of the job so far

The highlight of my job so far has been my 4 month secondment to the NDA working on their graduate scheme.  I also really enjoyed having the opportunity to work with different people in very different locations on the Shared Services project.  I feel like I have been given a job with responsibility from the very beginning.

Comments about the graduate scheme

The graduate scheme, and the company as a whole, encourages graduates to learn as much as possible about the company and what different sites and departments do.  If you have a lot of drive then this is a really good company to work for as there are lots of opportunities to gain experience, new skills and build on existing knowledge.

Hopes for the future

In the near future I am looking forward to working in different departments, improving my understanding and knowledge.  I will be taking courses in project management and HR and going on secondment to the NDA to help with their graduate scheme.  I also see myself managing a team at some point in my career.
