Name

Job Title
Trainee Health Physicist
Company
Magnox
Typical Day

When I finished university, I thought that the learning stage of my life had been completed and that it was now time for the ‘doing’.  In fact, the learning stage had only just begun.

As a graduate working for Magnox, I have been able to expand on the skills and abilities developed throughout university, allowing me to work towards becoming an expert in my chosen field of Health Physics.

My working day grants me the freedom not only to contribute to the projects taking place around the site, but also to explore every aspect of radiation protection, from monitoring radiation levels, to dose assessments, radiation shielding techniques, transport of radioactive materials and the application of current government legislation and international recommendations.

Advice for a New Graduate

My advice to any new graduate would be to explore every aspect of your chosen discipline.  Set out your goals and steadily work towards them.  At Magnox you will be given great opportunity and tremendous support.  Use your opportunities wisely.

Highlight of Job so Far

Having completed my first year as a Magnox graduate, it gave me a great sense of accomplishment when I was finally able to put my skills and training into practice and contribute to a number of projects around the site.  Initially, it is quite difficult to become involved with the day-to-day workings of the station.  Gradually, however, you feel the balance shift from the initial training role, to one in which you are able to contribute back to the site.

Comments about the Graduate Scheme

I have immensely enjoyed the Magnox training scheme.  In particular, I enjoy the freedom I have been given to explore various areas of interest within my own department.  I have not been confined to one particular aspect of the job and this allows me to gain great experience and further develop my knowledge and skills.

Hopes for the Future

The goal in my career remains the same as the goal throughout my university life – to become an expert in my chosen field.  Thanks to the support I receive through my job, I am able to work towards becoming a qualified Radiation Protection Advisor.  This will be extremely challenging and will require lots of dedication and hard work.  However, I have extremely enjoyed my first year with Magnox and I am looking forward to further, exciting challenges in the many years to come.
