Maintenance Technician
Typical job description:
A mechanical, instrument or electrical maintenance technician who works on an offshore oil or gas platform/FPSO carrying out planned and unplanned maintenance activities in accordance with industry/company procedures and safe systems of work.
Key Processes:
The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:
- Maintenance, testing and inspection activities;
- Fault-finding and repair of plant, systems and equipment;
- Modification or replacement of plant, systems and equipment;
- Prepares and signs work permits;
- Interprets technical drawings;
- Technical reporting
Entry Level:
Recognised trade apprenticeship;
NVQ/SVQ Level 3 certification or equivalent;

Industry Standard:
Core Competence Assessment;
HNC/HND in chosen discipline;
Appropriate medical and offshore survival certification
Competencies:
- Commitment to HSE;
- Appropriate level of technical competence;
- Fully familiar with "permit to work" system, isolation procedures and safety management systems;
- Ability to interpret/mark-up technical drawings;
- Communication skills;
- Problem-solving skills;
- Team-working skills
Knowledge needed for the role:
- Understanding of industry HSE practices applicable to job role;
- Practical knowledge and experience of maintenance of offshore plant, systems and equipment
Pay and conditions:
Pay and benefits vary between companies but generally annual salaries are typically in the range of £45,000 - £55,000 including regular allowances.
The usual work pattern offshore is 12 hour shifts. The work cycle is usually 2 or 3 weeks offshore then 2 or 3 weeks onshore leave, depending on the company.
