Technician - Support Services

Typical job description:

Technicians in service roles do design, specification, testing and procurement work and assess plant safety and procedures. These are vital service functions to support the safe and reliable operation of production functions.

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • Design and review of plant and instrumentation
  • Developing plant and equipment specification
  • Developing maintenance procedures & schedules and special tools for new plant
  • Support knowledge base development in the discipline
  • Attending and repairing test of machines and equipment
  • Checking and calibrating instruments
  • Specification of replacement parts
  • Support to procurement in inspection of suppliers
  • Assist with machinery and equipment commissioning
  • Forward planning of resource requirements

Entry Level:

Normally through an Advanced Apprenticeship programme (which includes a NC in an Engineering discipline (or equivalent) and an S/NVQ Level 3 in an Engineering Discipline

To be accepted for an Advanced Apprenticeship you need - Five A-C grade GSCE’s (including English, Maths and Science) or Standard grades - credit or a Level 2 equivalent

Industry Standard:

Advanced Apprenticeship Completion Certificate
HNC/HND in an Engineering discipline
Professional Engineering Technician (Engineering Council)

Competencies:

  • Able to read and interpret engineering and circuit drawings
  • Good analytical and problems solving skills
  • Writing technical reports
  • Able to work well on their own or in a team
  • High standard in ICT literacy.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Good communication and written skills
  • Good understanding of the procurement & test/ inspection
  • Understanding of hazards and risks

Knowledge needed for the role:

  • Current equipment and control systems
  • Information Communications Technology
  • Health & Safety Legislation, related Codes of Practice and regulations
  • Planning and scheduling techniques
  • Test and commissioning procedures

Pay and conditions:

Salaries are in the range of £15,000 to £25,000 per year depending on acquired skills, disciplines and leadership. Extra payment is made if shift work or overtime is needed.

Between 35 and 40 hours per week. May be required to travel. The industry has an excellent safety record and culture.
