Director - Technical

Typical job description:

The Director – Technical is responsible for leading and maintaining development of the plant performance in output, safety, environmental impact and use of material and fuel. The Director is also responsible for the Health and Safety management systems and for ensuring their application.

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • Strategic management of the Health, Safety, Environment and Quality functions
  • Ensuring the understanding and application of all regulations and standards in these areas by operations, maintenance and support staff and by supply chain support to the site
  • Coordination of all such processes and activities with production functions
  • Accountable to the Site and Headquarters Directors on these issues
  • Development of the long term site plan technical/ support resources

Entry Level:

- Degree in Engineering or Science or equivalent
- Chartered Engineer or Scientist
- NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health or equivalent
- Significant experience of health, safety and environmental roles on sites

Industry Standard:

- MSc in Engineering or Science
- Chartered Health & Safety Practitioner (IOSH) or equivalent

  • Strong science and engineering capability
  • Safety & health, environmental and quality procedures management
  • Good management and leadership skills
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Financial and planning capability
  • Classified Person on the national register of Radiation Classified Workers

Knowledge needed for the role:

  • Full knowledge of Nuclear site licence conditions, Nuclear Installations Act and IRR
  • Full knowledge of Environmental statutes and regulation
  • Full knowledge of Health & Safety regulations and codes of practice
  • Sound knowledge of production processes
  • Emergency planning and procedures for the site

Pay and conditions:

Salaries are in the range of £50,000 to £90,000 plus allowances and incentives, dependent on site size and responsibilities.

Between 35 and 40 hours per week normal hours and on call at all times. The industry has an excellent safety record and culture
