Engineer - Production or Maintenance

Typical job description:

Engineers in Production and/or maintenance roles are typically part of the production team responsible to ensure that the plant operates optimally and safely, producing the best output and quality of product and that plant improvements and maintenance are achieved to time and budget.

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • Assess plant performance
  • Manage the use of raw materials, engineering equipment, spares and supplies
  • Assess potential suppliers/subcontractors with the support of procurement and other functions
  • Work with plant production/maintenance teams in day to day and week to week tasks
  • Manage the plant production/maintenance data collection and records and data analysis for improvement
  • Assess designs and recommend changes for production/maintenance improvement
  • Participate in process and safety design review meetings
  • Act as deputy to Production/ Maintenance Managers when required

Entry Level:

Degree or HND/Foundation Degree in a Production, Mechanical, Electrical or Process Engineering discipline (or relevant Science)

Industry Standard:

- Degree in a Production, Mechanical, Electrical or Process Engineering discipline (or relevant Science)
- Chartered Engineer
- IOSH Managing Safely Certificate

Competencies:

  • Technically expert in the production technologies and in the plant types used
  • Ability to investigate and assess process and plant performance and recommend improvement
  • Ability to work with team members and others to achieve business objectives
  • Ability to communicate ideas and recommendations to senior management
  • Ability to work as a team member in a production and development environment
  • To be able to effectively communicate work issues within the team in the plant and at meetings with subcontractors/suppliers
  • Classified Person on the national register of Radiation Classified Workers

Knowledge needed for the role:

  • A sound understanding of relevant modern production technologies
  • Health & Safety Legislation, Company Quality Procedures, Site licence conditions, the Safety Case and the regulators
  • Information Communications Technology
  • Planning and project management

Pay and conditions:

Salaries are in the range of £24,000 to £40,000 per year depending on acquired skills, disciplines and qualifications.

Between 35 and 40 hours per week. Engineers often work shifts and overtime and might be called out on emergency plant breakdowns. The industry has an excellent safety record and culture.
