First Line Supervisor

Typical job description:

The First Line Supervisor heads a small team providing services support to a production team or operating a plant unit. There is responsibility to train team members on the job and to assess their performance for development.

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • Ensure the development of team members and the completion of identified training
  • Focus, engage and energise team members, managing, recognising and rewarding good performance
  • Act as Nominated Supervisor to enable prescribed duties to be carried out.
  • Assess and ensure standards of team and individual work
  • Prepare and monitor team objectives reporting progress on agreed actions
  • Carry out investigation into events involving team members
  • Work closely with other Team Leaders and Team Members

Entry Level:

- S/NVQ Level 2 in Chemical, Pharmaceutical and Petrochemical Operations or Performing Engineering Operations or Performing Manufacturing Operations
- City and Guilds Level 2 Process Technology
- Experience within engineering and/or science roles

  • Current process and control technology
  • Information Communications Technology
  • Health & Safety Legislation, related Codes of Practice and regulations
  • Planning and scheduling techniques
  • Continuous Improvement techniques

Pay and conditions:

Salaries are in the range of £21,000 to £30,000 per year depending on qualifications and experience
Between 35 and 40 hours per week.

Supervisors often work shifts and overtime and might be called out on emergency plant breakdowns. Extra payment is made for shift work and overtime. The industry has an excellent safety record and culture/
