Manager - Production or Maintenance

Typical job description:

The Managers of Production and/or of Maintenance are responsible to ensure that the plant operates optimally and safely, producing the best output and quality of product and that plant improvements and maintenance are achieved to time and budget. They manage teams of people in these roles.  Many plants work 24/7 and the Managers must rely on shift teams to achieve these aims.

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • Ensure compliance with Radioactive Substances Act (RSA) 93 authorisations and underpinning Compilation of Environment Agency Requirements (REAR) documents
  • Manage the operations of the plant within its safe operating envelope as defined in the safety case
  • Responsible for the production to quality standards and programme
  • Responsible for the management of the health, safety and welfare of all plant staff, visitors and contractors
  • Authorise discharges of treated effluent to site effluent system
  • Assist with audits and reviews of the safety case and facility safety systems
  • As appropriate, investigate abnormal events and implement suitable recommendations
  • Responsible for the implementation and compliance of local area emergency response plans

Entry Level:

Degree in Mechanical or Chemical engineering or other Engineering discipline (or relevant Science)
IOSH Managing Safely Certificate
Relevant experience in a Production/Maintenance Environment

Chartered Engineer or Scientist
NEBOSH General Safety Certificate
S/NVQ in Management or equivalent

Competencies:

  • Technical, financial and resource management of staff in production environment
  • Excellent management and leadership skills
  • The ability to work with others in achieving common goals
  • Good communication skills
  • Use of hazard identification and risk management techniques
  • Computer literate
  • Classified Person on the national register of Radiation Classified Workers

  • Current processing technology methods
  • Health & Safety Legislation, related Codes of Practice and regulations
  • Fire Fighting and General Safety
  • Manual Handling techniques
  • Radiological Safety and protection
  • Emergency response arrangements and procedures, Local area emergency arrangements
  • Planning and scheduling techniques
  • Continuous Improvement techniques
  • Information Communications Technology

Pay and conditions:

Salaries are in the range of £30,000 to £45,000 per year depending on experience.
Between 35 and 40 hours per week.

The Managers often might be called out on emergency plant breakdowns out of normal working hours. The industry has an excellent safety record and culture.
