Manager - Support services

Typical job description:

The Manager Support Services provides strategic and professional technical management support to operational plants, involving the development of innovative solutions requiring a high level of technical competence.

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • To provide strategic advice for plant operation, production and quality
  • To advise on how activities of the plant comply with statutory requirements, Assurance (Safety, Quality, Environment, Security and Health) management systems and relevant best practice.
  • To be responsible for the scheduling and specification documentation to meet project requirements of timely delivery, cost and quality for plant upgrade or refurbishment
  • To ensure that the procurement is compliant with the process and safety management system
  • To be responsible for production planning and material supply issues
  • To ensure compliance with company procedures for procurement, raw materials and product logistics

Entry Level:

- Degree in Production Engineering, Engineering or Science
- Experience in procurement and planning/scheduling

Industry Standard:

- Chartered Engineer or Scientist
- Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply – Level 4 Foundation Diploma in Purchasing and Supply

  • Highly literate with good presentation skills.
  • Attention to management systems and their development
  • Credible and persuasive.
  • Motivated and energetic, willing to 'go the extra mile'
  • Classified Person on the national register of Radiation Classified Workers

Knowledge needed for the role:

  • Good knowledge of the plant and processes
  • Good understanding of Quality Assurance systems and legislation
  • Good understanding of Procurement practice and commercial law
  • Planning and scheduling techniques
  • Continuous Improvement techniques
  • Information Communications Technology
  • A good understanding of engineering project processes including the principles behind staged safety cases

Pay and conditions:

Salaries are in the range of £30,000 to £45,000 per year depending on skills and leadership.
Between 35 and 40 hours per week.

The Manager might be called out of hours on emergency plant breakdowns. The industry has an excellent safety record and culture.
