Science Technician

Typical job description:

The Science Technician is principally responsible for ensuring that a quality service is provided by the scientific team on a daily basis. The team is part of Operations Support group function responsible for providing a plant efficiency and production support service.

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • Ensuring that the team provides a quality service on a daily basis
  • Supporting the Operations Support head in managing the group and workload to meet safety requirements and other business plan objectives
  • Supporting the group Head in training and developing team members
  • Controlling the issue of work to the team
  • Supporting business improvement of the team and undertaking project work as required

Entry Level:

- HNC/HND or Degree in an appropriate Science

Industry Standard:

- Level 3 in IT
- IOSH Working Safely Certificate

Competencies:

  • expertise in chemical analysis, laboratory practices and chemical safety
  • excellent business, organisational and people management skills
  • good understanding of operations processes and procedures, especially including nuclear site licence and other safety requirements
  • the ability to set and reinforce high standards
  • be enthusiastic, willing to take on and develop responsibilities and be determined to succeed
  • Classified Person on the national register of Radiation Classified Workers

Knowledge needed for the role:

  • a sound knowledge of plant chemistry at the site
  • Current processing technology methods
  • Information Communications Technology
  • Health & Safety Legislation, related Codes of Practice and regulations
  • Planning and scheduling techniques
  • Process control and instrumentation systems

Pay and conditions:

Salaries are in the range of £20,000 to £33,000 per year depending on qualifications, skills, disciplines and leadership.

Between 35 and 40 hours per week. Technicians often work shifts and overtime and might be called out on emergency plant breakdowns.

Extra payment is made for shift work and overtime. The industry has an excellent safety record and culture.
