Scientist Engineer - Support Services

Typical job description:

A Support Services Scientist or Engineer may have various roles: in a procurement role is responsible to the Supply Chain Manager for the implementation of all activities and initiatives relating to Procurement Engineering at the site, in a technical development role the Scientist or Engineer may study plant performance in operation, or in test facilities, and make recommendations for process or plant improvements.

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • Procurement engineering to support safe & reliable operation of the plant and maintain full compliance with safety and environmental standards
  • Ensuring procurement engineering for plant operation and the Materials Planning process
  • Managing compliance of standards and arrangements associated with the specification of plant spares and services
  • Monitor on-shelf life extensions and plant refurbishment activities
  • Managing the strategic spares technical catalogue & Company technical catalogue
  • Any other duties necessary to underpin a controlled development and supply chain environment

Entry Level:

- Degree in a Science or Engineering discipline

Industry Standard:

- Chartered Engineer or Scientist
- Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply – Level 3 Certificate in Purchasing and Supply

Competencies:

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to build and develop effective relationships with suppliers and plant staff to achieve business objectives
  • Self motivation and a flexibility of approach with a questioning attitude
  • Ability to assess suppliers of raw materials and engineering equipment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Commercial practice and the law
  • Good technical competence with equipment test, commission and operate
  • Positive attitude to challenging the status quo, actively identifying and supporting change initiatives
  • Demonstrated Nuclear Safety awareness

Knowledge needed for the role:

  • Good understanding of internal business and external marketplace
  • Demonstrated commercial knowledge and Procurement Codes of Practice
  • Good knowledge of Nuclear plant operations and maintenance processes.
  • Knowledge of nuclear quality standards as applied to product and equipment
  • Knowledge of equipment design and procurement processes
  • Information Communications Technology
  • Health & Safety Legislation
  • Planning and scheduling

Pay and conditions:

Salaries are in the range of £24,000 to £40,000 per year depending on acquired skills, disciplines and leadership.

Between 35 and 40 hours per week. Engineers often work shifts and overtime and might be called out on emergency plant breakdowns. The industry has an excellent safety record and culture
