Technician - Production & Maintenance

Typical job description:

Technicians’ work in plants involves fault analysis, defect identification and repair, the routine maintenance and repair of a wide range of production plant and equipment and installation of new equipment. Supporting the work of production engineers and plant managers, technicians can also work in process development, design, construction and operations. Safety and quality of work are paramount.

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • Undertaking planned, routine maintenance
  • Planning and provisioning for maintenance and installation work
  • Defect recognition, rectification and installation of new or replacement plant/equipment
  • Safety and quality plans for outages
  • Inspection and test of own and others’ work
  • Reports of work done and findings of test and inspections

Entry Level:

- Normally through an Advanced Apprenticeship programme which includes a NC in an Engineering discipline (or equivalent) and an S/NVQ Level 3 in an Engineering Discipline.

- To be accepted for an Advanced Apprenticeship you need - Five A-C grade GSCE’s (including English, Maths and Science) or Standard grades - credit or a Level 2 equivalent.

Industry Standard:

Advanced Apprenticeship Completion Certificate
HNC/HND in an Engineering discipline
Professional Engineering Technician (Engineering Council)

Competencies:

  • Able to read and interpret engineering and circuit drawings
  • Good analytical and problems solving skills
  • Writing technical reports
  • Able to work well on your own or in a team
  • High standard in ICT literacy.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Good communication and written skills
  • Good understanding of the production process.
  • Understanding of hazards and risks and demonstration of safe behaviour
  • Classified Person on the national register of Radiation Classified Workers

Knowledge needed for the role:

  • Current production technology
  • Equipment / control and instrumentation systems
  • Information Communications Technology
  • Health & Safety Legislation and Regulation and related Codes of Practice
  • Planning and scheduling techniques
  • Continuous Improvement techniques

Pay and conditions:

Salaries are in the range of £15,000 to £28,000 per year depending on acquired skills and maintenance disciplines and with opportunities for further development.

Between 35 and 40 hours per week. Technicians often work shifts and overtime and might be called out on emergency equipment breakdowns.

Extra payment is made for shift work or overtime. The industry has an excellent safety record and culture.
