Engineer

Typical job description:

An experienced disciplined engineer, who works on refinery units or groups of units responsible for the safe, efficient and effective operation and maintenance of these units. Optimises and monitors plant performance to maintain production planning targets. May be engaged in supervising a small group of junior engineers.

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • Advises operation department on the optimisation of plant and utility equipment efficiency.
  • Assists operational staff in the solution of technical problems and the training of process operators.
  • Seeks ways and means of modifying plant, equipment and processes to become more effective and checks results. This may necessitate relatively minor design studies.
  • Coordinates, assists with and evaluates the results of plant test runs.
  • Carries out technical/economic studies, relating to future plant operating programmes.
  • Demonstrates awareness of other disciplines.
  • Carries out independent evaluation of projects and processes.
  • Develops and implements plans up to six months ahead.

Entry Level:

Degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Instrument or Electrical Engineering (or other engineering discipline)
Extensive experience in refinery plant operation or maintenance

Competencies:

  • Good communication skills.
  • Able to read and understand piping and instrumentation drawings and other engineering documents.
  • Project management skills.
  • Responds to production planning and operational requirements.
  • Prepare for planned and unplanned maintenance activities.
  • Problem solving.

Knowledge needed for the role:

  • Has a complete understanding of the business and its impact on impact on local, national and international markets
  • Health and Safety issues and Codes of practice relevant to the industry
  • COSHH and COMAH Regs
  • Risk Assessments

Pay and conditions:

Salaries are in the range £25,000 to £38,000 plus other allowances. Normal daywork hours and subject to weekend and public holiday on call duties.
