Laboratory Supervisor
Typical job description:
Responsible for ensuring all sampling and testing activities including crude oil,intermediate & final products, outfall, effluent & water, stack emmissions and air quality are carried out in accordance with company procedures.
Key Processes:
The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:
- Manages, leads and co-ordinates laboratory team
- Responsible for all laboratory plant, equipment and activities including fiscal, legislative and investigative requirements.
- Liaises with regulatory bodies including HSE, EA/SEPA, HMRC
- Ensures sufficient supply, maintenance and calibration of laboratory plant and equipment.
- Liaises with internal departments and external bodies including product distributors.
- Responsible for maintaining a good housekeeping regime
- May work shifts
Entry Level:
- HNC in Chemistry or Applied Science
- S/NVQ L2 Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities

Industry Standard:
- HNC in Chemistry or related subject
- S/NVQ Level 3 in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities
- Functional Skills – IT Level 2
Competencies:
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of all fuels testing procedures
- Management and leadership skills
- Good communication skills
- Team player and act as “Leader as Coach
Knowledge needed for the role:
- Health and Safety issues and Codes of practice relevant to the industry
- Legislation including Health & Safety at Work Act and HMR&C Regulations, Bills of Laden etc.
- Risk Assessments
Pay and conditions:
Salaries are in the range £18000 to £28000 plus allowances. Normal daytime hours subject to overtime working.
