Core Process Operator
Typical job description:
Key Processes:
The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:
- Extensive knowledge of a range of operating jobs
- Reports on and investigates deviations from normal operating conditions and would be able to deal with incidents, hazards and emergencies
- Shuts down and starts up operating equipment as directed. Brings standby equipment into service
- Conducts minor maintenance and prepares equipment for maintenance and safe handover to and from maintenance personnel within scope of authority
- Takes product samples and carries out simple tests
- Gives and receives an effective shift handover
- Housekeeping in area
- Participates in shift team development including learning and development of shift personnel
Entry Level:
Minimum of 3 GCSEs A-C grades or 3 Standard grades – credit (English, Maths and a science subject.)

Industry Standard:
- HNC in Chemical Engineering
- S/NVQ 3 in Refinery Field Operations
- Functional Skills – IT Level 2

Knowledge needed for the role:
- Has an understanding of the business and its impact on impact on local, national and international markets
- Health and Safety issues and Codes of practice relevant to the industry
- Thorough knowledge of the refinery plants within scope of authority
- COSHH and COMAH Regs
- Risk Assessments
Pay and conditions:
Salaries are in the range £22,000 to £30,000 plus shift and other allowances.
Core operators usually work a continuous shift cycle averaging out at 37.5 hours a week.
Shift patterns vary between 8 and 12 hrs.
