Maintenance Technician

Key Processes:
The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:
- Carries out routine and non-routine maintenance activities within one or more designated work areas
- Signs agreed work permits as performing authority
- Acts as mentor & coach to apprentices and entry level technicians
- Contributes to modification or replacement of plant and equipment as agreed by recognised authority.
- Installs new equipment and plant within their agreed scope of authority and assists in the commissioning of plant & equipment as required.
- Maintains a good housekeeping regime
- May be required to work additional hours
Entry Level:
- A minimum of 3 GCSEs OR 3 standard grades (English, Maths and a science or technical subject).
- Entry is normally through an apprenticeship programme including a Level 3 Technical certificate and a Level 3 S/NVQ specified in the framework.

Industry Standard:
- HNC in mechanical, instrument or electrical engineering or related subject
- S/NVQ Level 3 in Maintenance Engineering or other related subject
- Apprenticeship Completion certificate
- Functional Skills – IT Level 2
Competencies:
- Good communication skills
- Able to read and understand piping and instrumentation drawings and other engineering documents including permits to work
- Problem solving
- Teamworker
Knowledge needed for the role:
- Health and Safety issues and Codes of practice relevant to the industry
- Planning and scheduling of maintenance activities
- Risk Assessments
Pay and conditions:
Salaries are in the range £20000 to £30000 plus allowances. Normal daytime hours subject to overtime working.
