Laboratory Technician

Typical job description:

Reports to the Laboratory Supervisor. Carries out all sampling and testing activities including crude oil,intermediate & final products, outfall, effluent & water, stack emissions and air quality.

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • Carries out all routine and non-routine tests and analysis on feed, intermediate, finished and other products
  • Maintains and calibrates the laboratory instruments and assists in all aspects of laboratory operations.
  • Prepares standard solutions and chemicals.
  • May be involved in non-operational duties including auxiliary fire fighting, first aid etc.
  • Maintains a good housekeeping regime
  • May work shifts

Entry Level:

- Minimum of 3 standard grades being English, Maths and a science subject

Industry Standard:

- National Certificate in Chemistry or applied science
- S/NVQ L3 in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities
- Functional Skills – IT Level 2

Competencies:

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of all fuels testing procedures
  • Good communication skills

Knowledge needed for the role:

  • Health and Safety issues and Codes of practice relevant to the industry
  • Legislation including Health & Safety at Work Act and HMR&C Regulations, Bills of Laden etc.
  • Risk Assessments

Pay and conditions:

Salaries are in the range £15000 to £25000 plus allowances. Lab technicians usually work a continuous shift cycle averaging out at 37.5 hours a week. Shift patterns vary between 8 and 12 hours.
